Mission

Georgia Innocence Project corrects and prevents wrongful convictions in Georgia and assists clients freed from wrongful incarceration.

Free the imprisoned innocent

Georgia Innocence Project is the only independent organization in Georgia that focuses solely on freeing innocent people from Georgia prisons. As a nonprofit law firm, we investigate and litigate cases at no charge to secure the freedom of those who are factually innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted. Since our founding in 2002, we've received 8,900 requests for assistance from individuals in Georgia prisons. To date, we've helped free 17 men who collectively spent 350 years wrongfully incarcerated.

Educate the public about the problem of wrongful convictions

Studies estimate 4% of people in prison are innocent of the crimes for which they are imprisoned. That is 2,500 people in Georgia alone. Wrongful convictions can stem from factors such as eyewitness misidentification, official misconduct, and false confessions - along with systemic issues like racial bias and mass incarceration. We raise awareness about wrongful conviction factors and empower people with the knowledge and tools to identify, correct, and prevent these injustices.

Advance practices to prevent others from suffering injustice

An important part of our mission is working to prevent future wrongful convictions. To that end, our team advocates for legislative reform and raises awareness through community education programs. By addressing root causes of injustices, we help create a more fair legal system for everyone.

Help the exonerated rebuild their lives

People who are freed from prison after being wrongfully convicted often not have experienced life outside of prison in decades. Georgia Innocence Project works with exonerees after their release to help them reintegrate into society. Additionally, our clients can find connection and friendship through our "freedom gatherings" and other social events.

Stand Up for the Wrongfully Convicted

Our mission is powered by people like you who believe no one should spend years in prison for a crime they didn't commit. Make a gift today to help free innocent people and protect others from the same injustice.
